Artificial Intelligence tools to enhance dental imaging

Dentists working with DentQ receive access to Dental Radiology reports created by Artificial Intelligence in collaboration with the leading provider in this field, DiagnoCat. These AI reports provide detailed description (anatomy, pathology and condition) and extended set of sections of every scanned tooth. AI Radiology reports are regarded as  a neutral second opinion, and therefore  help dentists improve conversation and gain trust of their  patients. But can these reports really be trusted?

You should decide for yourself, and here is some background that may help you to do so:

  • AI radiology reports are designed as an decision-support tool for the dentist, but the final decision regarding the treatment should always be done by the dentists themselves, since they must consider the patient’s preferences and reported symptoms, as well as the clinical and anatomical condition of the patient’s teeth and gums he inspects just before the treatment.
  • Nevertheless, the provided AI radiology reports for CBCT scans have above 98% accuracy. This level of accuracy is much higher than the accuracy of dentists, on average, when they interpret 3D CBCT scans. Again, the dentist is responsible for deciding on the best treatment plan for the patient, but it seems the AI reports are a very high quality tool to take into consideration.
  • In fact, these AI reports got CE approval last year, as a decision-support tool. This means that they were thoroughly tested, and found to be delivering quality results and insights time and again. So if the CE approved it, you can probably trust it.
  • And, before you receive AI reports from DentQ, our veteran dental radiologists examine each AI report manually, correct mistakes if and when they do occur, and add their own independent report into it. We call this combined report AI+Human Radiology report, and its accuracy level, following the manual inspection, is way higher than 98%. So when you receive our dental radiology reports, you enjoy the best of both worlds (Dedicated AI and a human expert), and can indeed trust these AI+Human reports.

Another thing to consider, is that the mutual feedback between our team and DiagnoCat’s AI leads to constant improvement of the quality of the reports day after day:

  • We send DiagnoCat feedback on mistakes we do find, and they train their AI which improves accordingly.
  • We also learn from the AI reports, and sometimes the radiologist corrents his own report after reviewing some insights provided by artificial intelligence. so the learning curve is climbing mutually.

You should also take into account that there specific cases in which the AI is more prone to make mistakes, such as:

  • When there are a lot of metal fillings in the mouth, which causes the x-ray to scatter, and distorts the resulting scan images. This obviously can lead to mistakes, since the interpretation is based on scans with built-in “background noises”.
  • When the patient almost does not have teeth in his mouth. Since x-ray detects hard tissues such as teeth and bones in great detail and sharpness, while providing less accurate and more blurred images when it comes to soft tissues such as gums, the AI faces more difficulties to report accurately.

In such cases, when the background noises or the lack of teeth does impair the AI’s accuracy, it is good to know that with DentQ’s combined AI+Human reports, the blind spots of the AI are compensated and corrected by our human experts. In rare cases, our processing team or our radiologist may dismiss the AI report altogether, and then you will receive from us the traditional human-only radiologist report. In any case, whatever radiology report you receive from us, AI+Human or only human, you can rest assured it is trustworthy.

Last but not least – we also provide AI+Human reports based on OPG (panoramic) scans. Since these two dimensional scans lack in detail (when compared to CBCT scan), the radiology reports deriving from them are obviously less accurate, even if the AI+Human combination offers the best quality possible. When it comes to implant procedures, we highly recommend preferring the more accurate 3D CBCT scans, to improve treatment quality and success rate. Nowaday, in almost all  the countries we operate in, CBCT for implants is already a the-facto guideline.
